'Man
for Peace' 2004 Award:
Yusuf
Islam will be in Rome, Italy, on Wednesday
where he will be presented with the 'Man
For Peace' 2004 award during
the World
Summit Of Nobel Peace Laureates.
Singer
Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens,
will be presented with the award by ex-Soviet
leader Mikhail Gorbachev on Wednesday. The
Gorbachev Foundation said Islam will receive
the award "for his dedication to promote
peace, the reconciliation of people and
to condemn terrorism."
A
spokeswoman for the Foundation said Stevens
was being honoured for his work as the chairman
of charity Small
Kindness to alleviate the suffering of
thousands of children and their parents in
countries including Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq.
Yusuf
Islam travels to Budapest, Hungary, this weekend
for the WANGO
Awards Banquet where he will be presented
with the WANGO
Humanitarian Award 2004.
In a letter to Yusuf Islam, the Secretary
General of the World Association of Non-Governmental
Organizations writes: I am delighted to inform
you that Small
Kindness has been selected as the 2004
recipient of the WANGO Humanitarian Award...
In taking the decision to present your organization
with an award, the WANGO International Council,
and the Awards Committee under the chairmanship
of Dr. Noel Brown, President of Friends of
the United Nations, were most impressed with
the consistent and courageous commitment of
you and Small Kindness to the values of service
and giving. Your helping the most vulnerable
victims of war and conflict, including alleviating
the suffering of families and children in
the Balkans and the Middle East, is a deeply
moving example to the world, and has helped
foster a culture of service and sharing."
This
will be the inaugural presentation of this
particular honour.

the World Social Award for his humanitarian
relief work helping children and victims of
war.

Islam nominated for World Social Award 2003.
The annual World Awards will be presented
for the fourth time by President Mikhail Gorbachev
in October of this year. Awards go to deserving
individuals in a variety of categories who
through personal commitment, sustained efforts
and excellence in their work have contributed
to create a better world. In yesterday's letter
addressed to Yusuf Islam, the World Awards
Organization writes: "In honour of your
exceptional merits and sustained humanitarian
efforts as well as your support for various
children's causes - including the charity
'Small Kindness' which has helped thousands
of orphans and destitute families - President
Gorbachev and the World Awards Committee have
nominated you for the World Social Award 2003."
Previous winners of a World Awards honour
include HH Pope John Paul II, Steven Spielberg,
Sir Paul McCartney, and Luciano Pavarotti.
The International Jury of the World Awards
will make its final decision on the winners
at the beginning of September.
