Moslem Aid to Afghan War Torn Children

This news clipping appeared in my local newspaper supplied by AP Press. The war in Afghanistan with Russia lasted from 1979 to 1989. This particular news clipping was from around 1986.

Cat Stevens may return to singing

Cat Stevens gave up his singing career eight years ago and became a Moslem, but he said he may record another song to help Islamic refugees from the Afghanistan war.

Stevens, who has taken the name Yusuf Islam and heads the Moslem Aid Organization, went Heathrow Airport on Saturday to meet a badly burned 3-month Afghan boy flown here by the group for emergency treatment.

Islam, whose hit songs as Cat Stevens included "Morning Has Broken" and "Wild Child," said he visited refugee camps full of children caught up in the fighting and that he is seriously considering making a new record to raise money for them.

"There are thousands of other kids needing treatment urgently in Afghanistan," said Islam. "It is a great tragedy, yet very few people in the West seem concerned about it. I want to raise awareness and making a comeback could be an ideal way to do that."
